6 Shameless Travel Hacks to Survive the Toxic Skies
Speaking of travel… Lineage Provisions has created the perfect grab‑and‑go snacks: 100% grass‑fed beef & air‑dried beef sticks and steak. Packed with protein and made from regenerative farms, they deliver real, ancestral nutrition on the move.
Note: We have no affiliate relationship with any of the inedible products mentioned below. These are just the specific tools we use to survive the road.
We’ve come to take it for granted, but modern travel is incredibly stressful on human biology. Between airplanes and hotels, the body is exposed to a barrage of recirculated toxins, plastics, and processed foods guaranteed to cause inflammation.
To combat the hyper-sterile, over-fragranced, and seed-oil soaked bombardment of modern travel, we polled SOS HQ for the most outlandish, effective protocols.
Get ready to judge:
1. Nature’s Water Bottle (TSA Approved)
The Hack: Bringing whole fruit, coconuts (credit Saladino) and hot food through security.
Why it works: While liquids over 3.4oz are banned, whole coconuts are often permitted by the TSA because they are "sealed by nature." Food is also generally allowed, and a perfect thermos can keep a hot meal edible for hours.
We tested several food jars with a thermal imaging camera and the bobber performed the best. The inside of the lid is stainless steel and wont leech plastic into your food. For coconuts, having a metal straw in your bag is key to puncture the eye (only works on small coco's).
2. Cooking with an electric pot in hotel rooms
The Hack: Packing tiny cooking appliances for the hotel room.
Why it works: Hotel food and room service have you captive, they are minefields for industrial seed oils (soybean, canola) and low-quality ingredients. By bringing a minimal setup, you maintain total control over the fuel you put in your body. It allows for cooking simple, broth-based meals like boiled potatoes + ground beef etc. Note, this is likely the hotel's worst nightmare. Hang that “Do Not Disturb” sign for the duration of your stay.
Our Product Pick: 1.2L Stainless steel cooker with rotating base (Amazon)
This was the smallest, simplest machine we could find with an all stainless steel cooking surface. You can stuff it with socks to save room in your carry on.
3. Pack your bag full of Lineage Provisions
Lineage Provisions exists to make eating like a human easy and nourishing—offering nutrient-dense, regeneratively raised meat snacks and supplements crafted from the world’s best ingredients.
Founded by Paul Saladino MD and Anthony Gustin DC, every product is third-party tested for purity, setting a new standard for animal-based, real-food nutrition that supports better farming, a healthier planet, and outrageously delicious food.
(PS - They are offering 20% off site wide for BFCM, no minimums. It's the best time to try 'em out 🙌)
4. How to ventilate a hotel room
The Hack: Leave the bathroom fan on 24/7
The Science: Hotel rooms are often sealed boxes where Carbon Dioxide (CO2) levels can skyrocket overnight.
Cognitive Function: A widely cited study from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that cognitive function scores were 61% to 101% higher in environments with increased ventilation and lower CO2 levels compared to conventional office environments.
Sleep Quality: Research from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) demonstrated that when bedroom CO2 levels were lowered via ventilation, subjects fell asleep faster, had improved sleep depth, and reported significantly better next-day concentration and reduced sleepiness.
Why it works: Running the bathroom vent creates negative pressure. This pulls stale air and CO2 out of the room and forces fresh(er) air to be drawn in from the hallway or under the door.
Airvalent is hands down the best CO2, humidity and temperature monitor on the market. It’s about an inch wide, the battery lasts for weeks, and you can chart key variables in real time to debug sleep issues, from low humidity, CO2 buildup or a faulty AC.
5. Dim red headlamps instead of blue light
The Hack: Using a dim red LED headlamp instead of hotel lights.
The Science: Standard hotel lighting is rich in blue spectrum light, which suppresses melatonin production almost instantly. Red light (specifically around 630-660nm) has the least effect on circadian rhythm.
Why it works: Once the sun goes down, switch to red light only. You can navigate the room, read, or work without signaling to your brain that it's high noon. It preserves your "sleep pressure" so you can actually rest in a strange bed.
Our Product Pick: Sofirn Amazon
Why: It has a dedicated, dimmable red-light mode that you can lock so it doesn't accidentally blast you with blinding white light. There are likely better options, and we think this model may have changed since our first purchase.
6. Blacking Out Junk Light
The Hack: Carrying a roll of Gaffer’s tape.
Why it works: Hotel rooms are infested with "junk light"—the standby LEDs on televisions, smoke detectors, and thermostats. Even small amounts of blue or green light at night can suppress melatonin production, disrupting circadian rhythms.
The Protocol: Gaffer’s tape is distinct from duct tape; it is opaque enough to block light but uses a synthetic rubber adhesive that leaves no sticky residue behind. A quick "tape tour" of the room ensures a pitch-black environment for optimal recovery.
Our Product Pick: Gaffer Power mini rolls
Why: It comes in a tiny "pocket" roll perfect for dopp kits, unlike the massive rolls used on film sets. Generally non marking and super strong, can be used to hang a makeshift blackout curtain or redirect airflow from vents.
