Is Glyphosate Really that Bad?

Stella & Milo’s makes non-GMO, glyphosate-free, kettle-cooked potato chips in grass-fed beef tallow—crunchy, clean, and seed-oil-free. Real ingredients, bold savory flavor.

With the Super Bowl just days away, millions of Americans are stocking up on bags of chips for the party spread. But while menus were being planned, a quiet war was fought in D.C. over what you are allowed to know about your food.

Here is the breakdown of the controversy and why the "safe and effective" narrative is suddenly crumbling.

1. The "Smoking Gun" Retraction

For 25 years, regulators and industry defenders have pointed to one specific study—Williams et al. (2000)—as the "Safety Bible" for glyphosate. It was the shield used to prove Roundup was safe for humans.

The Update: In late 2025/early 2026, the journal Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology formally retracted this study.

Why? It was confirmed to be ghostwritten by Monsanto. Internal emails revealed during lawsuits showed that company employees wrote the paper, then paid independent scientists to sign their names to make it appear unbiased.

The Implication: The foundational "proof" of safety that government approvals were built on has now been officially wiped from the scientific record.

2. The New Data: Kids & Fertility

Beyond the legal battles, two major pieces of research have just changed our understanding of the biological risks.

Leukemia in "Kids"

The Global Glyphosate Study (GGS), a massive multi-year project, released data showing that rats exposed to "safe" low levels of glyphosate (levels currently allowed in our water) developed higher rates of leukemia.

  • The Worry: About half of these deaths occurred in young animals (less than 1 year old), mirroring early-onset cancers in human children.

Sperm vs. Blood

We used to think the body filtered these chemicals out. However, a 2024 study in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety analyzed French men and found glyphosate in 57% of sperm samples.

  • The Shocking Stat: The concentration of glyphosate in sperm fluid was 4x higher than in the blood.

  • Translation: The body doesn't just "filter it out." It appears to actively accumulate in reproductive organs, causing oxidative stress that damages DNA—potentially affecting not just the man, but his future children.

While we were watching football, industry lobbyists tried to sneak a provision called "Section 453" into the House Appropriations Bill (the bill that funds the government).

  • The Goal: It would have given pesticide companies federal immunity, preventing individual states (like California) from requiring cancer warning labels on Roundup if the EPA currently labels it as "safe."

  • The Result: Grassroots pressure worked. Section 453 was stripped out of the bill in January 2026 before it passed.

  • The Catch: The coast isn't clear. The industry is expected to try again immediately by hiding the same language in the upcoming Farm Bill.

The 3-Second "Clean Snack" Protocol

You don’t have to stop snacking, but you should snack smarter. Here is the checklist to keep the pantry safe:

  • Look for Small Producers: While "Organic" is an expensive certification, many high-quality smaller producers utilize best practices to avoid toxic pesticides without the corporate red tape.

  • Prioritize Beef Tallow: Animals act as a biological filter. Water-soluble herbicides like glyphosate do not bioaccumulate in tallow (fat) the way they do in soybeans, grains, or water-rich crops.

The Bottom Line: The legal battle over glyphosate is far from over, but the data suggests minimizing exposure is the safest bet for long-term health.

Better Chips, Zero Worry

Stella & Milo’s makes chips the way they used to be made: by hand. They use just three ingredients: Non-GMO, glyphosate free potatoes, grass-fed beef tallow, and mineral sea salt. No seed oils, no weird drying chemicals, just crunch.
