Peanut oil PSA 🥜

Why you'd rather eat canola

Many national chains(Chick-Fil-A, Five Guys) and upscale restaurants advertise their use of peanut oil as a plus, but you’d literally rather them use canola oil.

Here is the key thing to understand: All refined seed oils are exactly the same substance outside of one meaningful parameter: Their omega-6 polyunsaturated fat (linoleic acid) content.

People with peanut allergies can eat peanut oil safely, same with soy. This is because ALL proteins and organic matter outside of the lipids have been stripped from the oil. There is nothing peanutty about the substance being referred to as peanut oil besides the fat ratio.

The exception not the rule: Is unrefined peanut oil, like you might find in thai food. This will contain the peanuts natural antioxidants, which is preferable, but it’s still extremely high in an unstable and fattening substance.

I was at an event this weekend and bumped into the sommelier of a notable and hyped French restaurant in NYC. He claimed they would never dare use seed oils, and I pointed to the frites, which he responded were done in peanut oil, and he got the lecture above in response.
