The Mediterranean ๐ฟ
Greece, Italy & Spain all consume 12kg of olive oil per person annually, so this is no surprise. If youโre good with EVOO, these are always going to be your best bet when dining out.
These countries are the most known for fraudulent olive oil as well, so keep an eye out for blended oils and try to choose places that seem true to their roots.
French food in America ๐ซ๐ท
Authentic French cuisine relies on butter and EVOO, but nowadays its been heavily bastardized in the states and even at home. As it has evolved to focus on style, the seed oils have crept in for their usability and mouth-feel.
A 3-Michelin starred French restaurant may still use seed oils to get a sear, traditional spots are hard to find. Your pommes frites are almost always soaked in seed oils, and skip the mayo too.
American ๐บ๐ธ
We know the deal here, avoid the deep fryer, mayos and salad dressings and conventional breads, itโs generally bad news out there.
Barbecue is often a saving grace.
Korean ๐ฐ๐ท
Korean BBQ is likely whatโs keeping them afloat here, often using little to no oil, and relying on rice and fermented sides.
Otherwise many asian cuisines opt for cheap neutral oils in the states.
Chinese & Japanese ๐ฅข
These are very different cuisines, but the American versions of both rely on neutral oils in their cooking.
There are a handful of authentic dumpling spots in NYC that use no oil, and a proper sushi Omakase is always a good option, skip the spicy mayo.
Mexican ๐ฒ๐ฝ
The taco has perhaps been the hardest hit by big-food. The economics of seed oils made it an irresistible neutral option over lard.
Taqueria Ramirez in Greenpoint is still holding it down though.
Thai ๐น๐ญ
Weโve only found one Thai restaurant in the country that will sub for Avocado oil, it's Thai Fresh in Austin. Otherwise it's basically a guaranteed dose of seed oils.
Indian ๐ฎ๐ณ
Indian food has largely embraced seed oils over ghee for convenience and cost.
