SOS AMA #1 🙋‍♀️

Are cheat meals ok? What's an emulsifier? Are we winning the war?

Question 1:

No question, just wanted to say your newsletter is fire 🔥🔥🔥

Response: 🫡

Question 2:

Are cheat meals ok ?

Response: If you consider seed oils a cheat meal you are still living in the dark. Seed oils are literally not food, educate yourself so you no longer find them appetizing.

Cheat meals/indulgences should be high quality, highly caloric FOODS that you love, some ideas:

  • High quality ice cream with fresh berries and raw honey

  • Going to the nice bakery across town to get fresh sourdough

If you view processed food as an indulgence you will never improve your health.

Question 3:

Hello - thanks for all you do. What's the go on Soy Lecithin? I have asked our local chocolate brand (Whittakers, here in NZ) how it is processed, and they have come back saying its intellectual property? If you have any idea that would be greatly appreciated

Response: Lecithins are emulsifiers, which are basically more highly refined seed oils specifically designed to allow water and oil to mix. There is evidence that lecithins disrupt the gut barrier, leading to inflammation and metabolic dysfunction, I’d do my best to avoid any isolated lecithins.

They are very common in shelf stable processed foods, breads ice creams and margarines to improve texture and simulate freshness.

Question 4:

What about sesame oil and walnut oil? I see these in marinades and dressings

Response: I’ve covered this before, but myself and many other experts in the war on seed oils view cold processed unrefined specialty oils used for flavoring as a treat that ultimately isn’t very harmful.

These oils are high in PUFA, but if they are kept cold, and they don’t make up a significant portion of your diet and fat ratios, they should be fine to consume occasionally.

Question 5:

What restaurants are you actively petitioning to remove seed oils. How can the public help.

Response: The dominoes are falling. I’ve actually spoken with the heads of some fast casual chains and I promise there is meaningful change materializing in the next year or so.

To help, you can support movements like Seed Oil Scout by following and sharing on social, as well as financially, including other brands, influencers and educators in the space.

That’s it for this week, you can ask questions here and I will get to it in next month’s AMA 🫡
