More Americans get sick from lettuce and leafy greens each year than any other food. A viral version of this claim says leafy greens kill more Americans than any other food, but that's false: per CDC foodborne illness data, leafy vegetables lead in illnesses, while poultry leads in deaths at 19%.

Why it matters right now: a parasite called Cyclospora is spreading through fresh produce across the country, and investigators still don't know which product is carrying it.

The numbers

Per CDC surveillance data as of July 9, 2026:

  • 843 confirmed U.S.-acquired cases across 31 states

  • 86 hospitalizations, zero deaths

  • Patients range from age 5 to 88, median age 44

  • Illnesses started May 1 through July 5

Michigan is tracking the hardest hit. State health officials report 2,640 cases as of July 13, 2026, a state-specific count that runs well ahead of the national tally. And because many people recover without ever getting tested, the true number is almost certainly higher everywhere.

What Cyclospora actually is

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite, not a bacteria like E. coli or Salmonella. Think of it as a hitchhiker that clings to fresh produce and causes weeks of watery diarrhea, cramping, and fatigue if untreated.

The good news: it's generally treatable with antibiotics and rarely causes serious complications. The bad news: it's stubborn. Standard washing reduces risk but does not guarantee removal.

The source is still a mystery

The FDA has two active investigations open, and traceback is underway. But as of now, the source has not been identified. No recall. No named product. No named brand.

Past Cyclospora outbreaks have been traced to raspberries, basil, cilantro, snow peas, and salad mixes. That history points toward fresh produce broadly, but naming a culprit today would be a guess, not a fact.

The produce protocol

Per CDC and MDHHS guidance, here's the play:

  1. Wash everything under clean running water before eating, cutting, or cooking

  2. Scrub firm produce (melons, cucumbers) with a clean brush

  3. Cut away bruised or damaged areas

  4. Separate herb leaves individually when washing (parasites hide in the folds)

  5. Buy whole heads of lettuce and discard the outer layers

  6. Peel when possible

  7. Cook to 158°F / 70°C, which kills Cyclospora outright

Two clarifications worth knowing: CDC says produce labeled "prewashed" does not need re-washing, and washing lowers risk but does not eliminate it entirely. Heat is the only sure kill.

Who should be extra careful

Immunocompromised individuals and anyone prone to dehydration should take extra care until the source is identified. For everyone else, the guidance is not to stop eating produce, it's to handle it like it matters.

Bottom Line

  • A Cyclospora outbreak has sickened 843+ people across 31 states, with Michigan tracking 2,640 cases on its own

  • Zero deaths reported; this parasite is unpleasant but treatable

  • The source is not yet identified, so no specific product should be blamed or avoided by name

  • Wash all produce, buy whole heads over bagged mixes, and peel when possible

  • Cooking to 158°F / 70°C is the only guaranteed kill; washing helps but is not a guarantee
